How to Choose the Right Tennis Racket

Choosing the right tennis racket is one of the most important steps in every player’s journey. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to upgrade your equipment, the right racket can make a huge difference in your comfort, performance, and development.

We help each player find a racket that suits their level, playing style, and physical ability. Here’s a simple guide to understanding what matters – and why.

1. Player Level Matters

  • Beginners: Should choose a racket that is light, easy to swing, and has a larger head size (100–110 sq. inches) to help with control and forgiveness. Comfort and ease of use are key.

  • Intermediates: May want more control and feel. A slightly smaller head size (98–100 sq. inches) with a medium weight offers better precision as skills improve.

  • Advanced Players: Often prefer heavier rackets with smaller heads for maximum control and stability, tailored to their unique playing style.

A champion is defined not by their wins but by how they can recover when they fall.

2. Racket Weight

  • Lightweight (260–285g): Easier to handle, ideal for juniors, beginners, or players with less strength.

  • Midweight (285–305g): A good balance of power and control, great for most club players and developing juniors.

  • Heavy (305g+): Offers stability and precision but requires good technique and strength.

We always recommend trying a few rackets under supervision to see what feels right in your hand.

3. Head Size

  • Larger Head Size (100–110 in²): More power and a bigger sweet spot. Ideal for beginners and casual players.

  • Mid-size (98–100 in²): Offers more control and precision. Great for intermediate to advanced players who generate their own power.

4. Grip Size

Choosing the right grip size is essential to avoid wrist or elbow injuries. The grip should feel comfortable and secure – not too small, not too big.

If you’re unsure, our coaches can help you measure your hand and test different sizes. We also offer grip customizations to fine-tune the feel.

5. Strings and Tension

While the racket frame is important, strings and string tension have a big impact on how the racket plays.

  • Lower Tension: More power, more comfort.

  • Higher Tension: More control, more feedback.

We help players select the right string setup based on their goals, level, and playing style.

Junior Players

For kids, the right racket size depends on age, height, and strength.
Using the correct junior racket helps prevent injury and supports proper technique development.
At our academy, we size rackets carefully for each young player, and adjust as they grow.
